Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “How Deep The Father’s Love For Us”

Written by Stuart Townend.

How Deep The Father’s Love For Us is a beautifully crafted song. I don’t know of another modern-day hymn that summarizes the Gospel and Christ’s death and resurrection as poignantly as this song does. It’s one of those songs that can bring a grown man to tears when stopping to read the lyrics and considering their weight (I might be that grown man!). And although we hear this song a lot around Good Friday/Easter, it’s one of those tunes we need to hear often as it reminds us again of Christ’s sacrifice. “It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished.” I need to sing that and be aware that it was my sin that put Him on the cross. But hallelujah, “His wounds have paid my ransom”!

How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon the cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
