Large (up to 95 cm long) parrots with very bright colors of green, red, blue and yellow tones. Males, females and juveniles are colored almost the same. The areas around the eyes and sides of the head are glabrous, sometimes with sparse and short feathers. The wings are strongly elongated and pointed towards the end. The tail is wedge-shaped, longer than the body. A characteristic feature is a large, laterally compressed and strongly rounded beak with a sharply curved tip. The macaw's beak is the strongest on Earth.
Distributed in Central and South America.
In natural conditions, they settle in tropical areas with wooded areas. They lead a gregarious lifestyle, but they create couples for many years. Schools of macaws sometimes harm fruit tree plantations. 1 species and 1 subspecies are included in the IUCN Red List.
With good care, they are easy to tame and feel great in captivity. They can live 30-75 years, but on average up to 60 years. The houses of these birds were still kept by the Indians of pre-Columbian America and today they are quite common at home. They feed on a grain mixture, various vegetables, fruits and other feeds.
