COVID19 | U.S 2020 Elections | False Investigations

The Covid-19 pandemic is among the most consequential global events since World War II, affecting virtually every country in the world. In the US, the pandemic struck during a presidential election year, shifting the political narrative and President Trump’s re-election prospects. Prior to the pandemic, the US economy was performing well, and Trump, while extremely polarizing, enjoyed strong support among Republican and many independent voters. The virus changed the narrative, and Trump’s response to the crisis was widely criticized.

The origins of COVID19 remains a highly speculative matter. Last year, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had indicated she would rather investigate President Donald Trump again than focus on the actual origins of the Chinese coronavirus and U.S. tax dollars that went to the Wuhan Institute of Virology from which intelligence officials increasingly believe the virus leaked. Pelosi and House Democrats were not interested in holding the Chinese Communist Party accountable and, instead, wanted to focus their oversight efforts on politically harming President Trump again just like they tried and failed with the partisan impeachment last year and earlier this year.

Meanwhile the World Health Organization caves to international pressure to investigate the origin of the novel bat virus. WHO published a 300 page report of their findings citing minimal evidence for why a lab leak was the least likely cause and a great deal of why the bat theory was extremely likely. The investigation was a milestone for changing attitudes toward the lab-leak theory but totally inadequate in disapproving the possibility of a lab spill. The experts examined only the theory that the natural virus escaped a lab through the accidental infection of staff. It did not consider the hypothesis of deliberate release or deliberate bioengineering of the virus, which scientists have already ruled out.

The report is already facing scrutiny. Although it’s a joint effort between Chinese and WHO officials, investigators representing the WHO were denied permission to visit the Wuhan market and collect other data in the initial phases of the research, leading some pundits to say that the WHO was ceding responsibility to China, its second biggest funder behind the United States. China also held back information about the initial outbreak in Wuhan, which delayed the WHO’s investigation.
