A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 in richter scale today rattled eastern Taiwan. According to Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau, the 6.1 magnitude quake was centered northwest of the city of Hualien and almost 19 kilometers (12 miles) deep. The strong earthquake causes light damage in the capital Taipei as well as in the east coast region. Sources indicate landslide in a lightly populated area. Two hikers were reportedly injured in Taroko Gorge National Park due to falling rocks. Taiwan, which is located on the string of seismic faults known as the ‘Rim of Fire’, often experience tremors. In 1999, a strong earthquake killed more than 2,300 people.
