The purpose of the balls: to improve water quality and save water. ... The Los AngelesDepartment of Water and Power said the shade balls could keep contaminants out of the water and reduce the evaporation of thereservoir by 85 to 90 percent during a drought.
Unusually high levels of the carcinogen bromate were discovered in the reservoir in October 2007. Bromate occurs when bromide, naturally present in groundwater, and chlorine, used to kill bacteria, react in strong sunlight.
Shade balls were tried on the reservoir as a cheaper alternative to increased chemical treatment. They also provide the added b6enefit of reducing evaporation, which is important during California’s four-year drought.
