The demon felt something softly thump the packed snow at his back. He glanced over his shoulder and saw a long, thin, scaly thing. He quickly turned his head away and ran from it in fear. He trudged through the deep snow, frantic that the thing was chasing him. He heard nothing following and jumped around to check. Clear. Whew! What was that? But then, *thump* behind him. This time he glanced over his other shoulder, and there it was again, a spade point protruding from its tip! He ran away again and stopped again and hopped around again to find; nothing. He heaved a breath, shrugged his shoulders, and heard *thump* again. This time he did not even look and just ran, his legs growing heavier from pushing through all that deep snow, his big heart pounding in his chest, breath wheezing through his maw. He stopped, and sure enough, *thump*. Wait a second… This time he concentrated, squeezed his eyes shut, and *thump* AHA! He smiled a fang-filled smile and thumped again. He had never had a tail before!
