The broadclub cuttlefish, after Sepia apama, is the second largest cuttlefish species, with a mantle length of 50 cm (20 in) and a weight of 10 kg (22 lb). The broadclub, like many cephalopods, can be observed in a variety of colors and textures. They are usually light brown or yellowish in color, with white mottled markings. Males can be dark brown in color, especially during wooing and mating. When the arms are extended, they contain longitudinal white bands that appear as large white blotches. Some of the arms have brown bands that run all the way to the top of the skull. A saddle mark with little white and brown patches can occasionally be spotted on the dorsal mantle. Narrow brown transverse bands, as well as prominent white transverse stripes and dots, can be found on the dorsal mantle. The ventral borders of the eyes are yellow.
