GAIN OF FUNCTION AND COVID19 | Wuhan Lab Leak | Pt.2

What is Gain of function research? GoF is medical research that alters disease causing organism in a way that increases pathogenesis, transmissibility, or host range (the types of hosts that a microorganism can infect). The term "gain of function" is sometimes applied more narrowly to refer to "research which could enable a pandemic-potential pathogen to replicate more quickly or cause more harm in humans or other closely-related mammals.

This research is intended to reveal targets to better predict emerging infectious diseases and to develop vaccines and therapeutics. There is clear evidence that GoF experiments on Corona Viruses had been ongoing in the Wuhan Institute of Virology until the start of the pandemic. It is the precarious nature of such research that I hope to make clear in this episode.

Finally, I was moved by the story of one Li Wenliang, a Wuhan ophthalmologist, who’d tried to warn his colleagues that the pneumonia could be a form of SARS was arrested, accused of disrupting the social order, and forced to write a self-criticism. He died of COVID-19 in February, lionized by the Chinese public as a hero and whistleblower. His story moved me so much that I had a new found appreciation for every first responder out there during this pandemic. You're not guaranteed tomorrow but you still risk it all to serve us.
