Individual investors and traders can make money when investments up, down, or sideways. Traders can go long, short, or be in market neutral positions by using inverse mutual funds or inverse ETFs. There is a random, non-trending, and non-random, trending, nature to the stock market. Some investors use short selling. Some traders generate income and capital gains by using weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual strategies which can offset losses. Income can come from dividends, interest, and stock option strategies. Also, options can be used for protection or hedging. There are many option strategies. Sometimes it is best to do nothing by staying on the sidelines.
