China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation has recently put forward the idea of a superfast ‘maglev’ train. ‘Maglev’ refers to the process of levitating trains off their tracks. Magnetic repulsion is used to keep the train off the ground and keep pushing it forward. The loss of friction between the wheels and the tracks helps trains achieve astonishing speeds. The train floats on a cushion of air with the 2-inch gap between the body of the train and the magnetic tracks.
