1. How to get V-Bucks in Battle Royale mode
There is only one way to earn V-Bucks in Fortnite completely for free, although it is the most time-consuming method of all: play the Battle Royale mode without purchasing the Battle Pass and evolve the Free Pass, until you reach the levels in which the game offers a quantity of the coins as a prize. The problem is that this offer is scarce.

Normally, the Free Pass only offers 200 V-Bucks per season. You need to play 5 seasons to collect the necessary amount to buy the Battle Pass (950 V-Bucks), building up to levels 11 and 34, the only two that reward you with V-Bucks.

If you manage to collect the V-Bucks this way and purchase the Battle Pass, things are different: you will have more levels that reward your effort with V-Bucks, to the point where you can collect the necessary V-Bucks to buy the next pass with your progress alone.

Of course, for this you have to play a lot and do very well in confrontation with other players in order to evolve within the time limit of each season. In other words, if you play constantly, you can continue to acquire the Battle Pass without ever having to spend a dime.

2. How to get V-Bucks in Save the World mode
As we already explained, Save the World mode is paid and is only available for Windows, macOS, PS4 and Xbox One. If you play on one of these systems and are willing to spend a good amount of money on the game, you will receive some bonuses periodically, including V-Bucks.

There are a few ways to earn V-Bucks in Save the World mode:

Entering the game daily: this is the simplest way and doesn't even require you to play. You earn miscellaneous items each day you log into Save the World mode, with the prize sequence not resetting if you skip one; on day 11 you will earn 50 V-Bucks, with the value going up as the days go by. At the end of 336 days you will have collected 10,000 V-Bucks, plus other prizes;
Complete the daily quests: Save the World offers a large number of daily quests, each earning 50 V-Bucks;
Complete Story Mode quests: Story Mode features a number of quests that earn a variety of rewards, including V-Bucks. Starting at level 70, you can team up with other players and defend higher-level regions.
