According to authorities, a biker camping in western Montana was killed by a grizzly bear.
According to a news statement from Powell County Sheriff Gavin Roselles, the tragic event happened around 4:14 a.m. on Tuesday in Ovando, a tiny hamlet about 74 miles from the state capital.
Roselles confirms to PEOPLE that bear spray was used during the incident, and that the bear left before first responders arrived.

When officials arrived on the site, they discovered a lady with obvious bear attack injuries, but attempts to heal her wounds were futile, according to Roselles.
"Officers from the Powell County Sheriff's Office and the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks processed the scene and spent many hours searching for the bear involved in the assault, using resources on the ground and in the air," Roselles said in the statement.
