A Tortoise is a land-dwelling reptile of the order Testudines. ... Many tortoises can retract their head, their four limbs and tail into the shell for protection. Tortoises have a beak but no teeth and no external ears, just two small holes on the sides of the head.

Tortoises look very much like other turtles at first glance. Like other turtles, they have a bony shell that's connected to their rib cage and spine. They're usually green or brown and covered in scales.

There are some personality characteristics that are common to all turtles and tortoises. They are quiet, shy, and harmless yet display intelligence. They can identify their keepers and know when it's feeding time. Turtles and tortoises are very sensitive to loud noises, vibrations, and sudden bright lights.

The researchers found tortoises can learn to find hidden food by watching another tortoise walk around a wall to collect a treat (Biology Letters, vol 6, p 614). This indicates that tortoises are capable of social learning, a trait thought to have evolved as a special cognitive adaptation in social animals.
