This is part 4 of a 7 part series about Ephraim and Manasseh. This part highlights the story of how Jesus Christ became Son of David, King of Israel.
Samuel's 2 sons were corrupt and the people asked Samuel to appoint a king over them like the other nations. Samuel was not pleased but YHWH told him that they have rejected him and not Samuel. He told them what manner of king they would have, that he would take the best of everything for himself but they still wanted a king.
Saul was of the tribe of Benjamin, he was looking for his fathers lost asses and he went to ask Samuel where they were, Samuel anointed Saul as king over Israel.
An Ammonite king named Nahash besieged the town of Jabez-Gilead. Saul gathered an army of Israelites to save them. The people then celebrated Saul as their king.
Samuel then reiterated the covenant at Gilgal after letting Israel know they have sinned by asking for a king.
The Philistines had garrisons in Israel in order to rule over them and Saul and his son Jonathan declared war on the Philistines. The Isrealites hid in the caves and bushes. Jonathan started a battle in the name of YHWH and there was a great earthquake which threw the Philistines into confusion allowing the Israelis to gain the upper hand. The Philistines then gathered a great army at Michmash while Saul gathered his army at Gilgal. Saul waited the seven days for Samuel but as the army began to flee Saul offered the burnt offering to YHWH that only the priest was allowed to offer. As soon as he was finished Samuel showed up and told him that YHWH had rejected him as king over Israel because of his disobedience.
Saul and Jonathan were the only ones who had swords. Jonathan killed a garrison of the Philistines by faith and there was a great earthquake sending the Philistines into confusion allowing the Israelis to rise up and confront them. Saul then pursued the Philistines with an army pronouncing a curse on anyone who eats food before evening. Jonathan did not know about the curse and he ate some food. Saul was willing to kill his son Jonathan but the people protected him. The Philistines escaped to their homeland because Saul pushed his men too hard and did not allow them to eat.
YHWH sent Saul to attack Amalec because he remembered when the Amalekites attacked Israel during their exodus from Egypt. Saul attacked Amalek and killed them all but fell short of following God's command because he saved some of the sheep and oxen and Agag, King of the Amalekites bringing them to Gilgal. Samuel met Saul at Gilgal and confronted him for not fully performing the command of YHWH. He then told him the kingdom will be removed from him and given to another.
Samuel then hacked king Agag to pieces with a sword.
YHWH then sent Samuel to anoint David of Bethlehem as king of Israel.
The Spirit of the Lord then departed from Saul and rested upon David while an evil spirit rested upon Saul. Saul was troubled by the evil spirit so his advisors suggested he send for David to come and sing for him to comfort him and it was done.
David wrote the Psalms these were songs he played on the harp.
Saul had formed a permanent standing army in Israel and established it's borders and subjugated its neighbors. David was put into the army by Saul because Saul wanted him dead but David prospered and became more popular among the people, he also became best friends with Jonathan, Saul's son. Saul want to reign David in so he gave him his daughter to marry, David considered it a great honor to become son in law to the king.
Saul's hatred for David became very clear and David had to go into hiding. This is when David received the shew bread from the priests at Nob and they were slaughtered at the behest of Saul by Doeg the Edomite.
David had a chance to take Saul's life several times but he did not he only made Saul confess that he was wrong. Saul was at war with the Philistines but he was not getting any answers from YHWH so he went to visit the witch of Endor. Saul had outlawed witchcraft in Israel so he disguised himself but the witch knew who he was. Saul had her conjure up Samuel from the dead and Samuel came and prophesied Saul's death.
Saul and his sons died in battle against the Philistines leaving David to take the throne of Israel. David first set up his kingdom in Hebron and then he too Jerusalem from the Jebusites making Jerusalem his capital and called it the city of David. The people of Jabesh-Gilead had retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons from the Philistines and burned them and buried them, David sent messenger thanking them for what they did.
Saul's captain Abner set up Saul's son Ishbosheth as king over northern Israel. Ishbosheth then berated Abner for having relations with Saul's ex concubine so Abner turned against him and brought the northern Israel to follow David instead.
