Israeli-Palestinian Recent Conflict Flare Ups with Calev Myers

In early May conflict flared up in the middle east between Hamas and Israel. This led to multiplied thousands of rockets being fired and a conflict lasting more than a week leaving more than 200 people dead in Israel and the occupied territories. Most casualties were in the coastal region of the Gaza Strip where Hamas was firing heavily from. A truce was mediated by Egypt emphasizing to both parties the importance of protecting innocent civilians.

This year’s violence is a part of an ongoing conflict that has now lasted more than 70 years - for most Jewish Israelis and Palestinians it is all they have ever known.

Here in Canada, in spite of concerns surrounding possible spread of COVID-19 protests occurred in various locations across the nation in support of Hamas. Many in the Jewish-Canadian community made statements regarding Israel’s right to defend themselves from Hamas attacks and also called for peace.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will provide $25 million to Palestinian civilians affected by the recent conflict. With 10 million going towards urgent assistance for affected civilians, 10 million going to rebuilding efforts and 5 million to peace-building initiatives between Palestinians and Israelis.

The loss of human life has been nothing short of devastating and many in Israel - Jewish, Israeli and Arab citizens alike are driving for peace holding solidarity rallies in regions where they have lived together peacefully for decades.

Here with me from just outside of Jerusalem to give his perspective on the recent events, insight on the history that has led to this point and possible solutions for lasting peace is Calev Myers.

Calev is an accomplished Israeli attorney, civil rights advocate and founder of ARISE – Alliance to Reinforce Israel’s Security and Economy.
