Joe Biden is the second Roman Catholic president in American history, and he wears it on his sleeve. He flaunts his faith more than any president since Jimmy Carter. He regularly attends Catholic Mass wearing his deceased son's rosary beads, and he often comments on how his Catholic faith helped him deal with the loss of his first wife and son, Beau. Unlike Kennedy, America's first Catholic president, Biden seeks to highlight how devout he is to the Catholic faith and how it shapes his presidency, so much so that the media has given him titles such as, "The Church Going President" and many others reflecting his piety. This image of the 'pious president' is being threaten right now by Catholic bishops who say Joe Biden and other Catholic politicians are at odds with the teaching of the Church. Bishops in America have decided to make a formal statement clarifying the Catholic Church's beliefs, which will most likely highlight how out of step Biden and other Catholics are with the teachings of the Church. Joe Biden and many others could be denied communion, the most important sacrament in Catholicism. Is there any precedent for something like this in the history of the Catholic Church, and how could this challenge Catholics on key political issues? Join the conversation and get answers to these questions and more on According2Sam episode #93.
