Whatever You Say, Say Nothing | Lyric Video

With every establishment party in the government and in the “opposition” supporting the introduction of draconian “hate speech” legislation, this song is most relevant to censorious times we live in.

Today in Ireland, Freedom of Speech is under attack and if this proposed law is passed we will have the Gardaí arresting people for Tweets and Facebook posts like they do in the UK while serious and violent crimes get less and less attention.

It’s disturbing to think that our Gardaí might be ordered to arrest and prosecute people for frivolous things such as “misgendering” someone or for having an unmutual opinion that is contrary to the state’s official position on serious issues, such as mass immigration and demographic change. Unfortunately, our Constitution does not have an amendment that protects Freedom of Speech and the government has the power to regulate and criminalise it. We already have sufficient laws against incitement to hatred and violence; the real purpose of “hate speech” laws is to shut down debate and silence dissent.

If you value the freedom that our heroes of 1916 fought and died for then you must let your voice be heard. We should be oblivious to our differences and wary of those that seek to divide the minority from the majority with their poisonous identity politics.

I believe people should be free to hold and express their opinions whether I agree with them or not.

I believe in Freedom of Speech for all.

WHATEVER YOU SAY, SAY NOTHING
By Colm Sands
(Performed by Makem & Clancy Live at the National Concert Hall 1983)

Chorus (x2):
Whatever you say, say nothing
When you talk about you know what
For if you know who should hear you
You know what you'd get
They'd take you off to you know where
For you wouldn't know how long
So for you know whose sake
Don't let anyone hear you singing this song

You all know what I'm speaking of
When I mention you know what
And I think it's very dangerous to even mention that
For the other ones are always near
Although you may not see
And if anyone asks “who told you that?”
Please don't mention me

(repeat Chorus)

You all know who I'm speaking of
When I mention you know who
And if you know who should hear me
You know what he'd do
So if you don't see me again
You'll know why I'm away
And if anyone asks you where I've gone
Here's what you must say

(Repeat Chorus)

Well that's enough about so and so
Not to mention such and such
And I’d better end my song now
I've already said too much
For the less you say, the less you hear
And the less you'll go astray
And the less you think and the less you do
The more you'll hear them say

(Repeat Chorus x 3)
