CURIOSITIES ABOUT THE MONKEY

Humans have always been fascinated by apes, as they are interesting creatures and are a source of knowledge and study about the human race. Monkeys are intelligent and sociable animals. They are known for running and jumping through trees with ease. Like anthropoids (as tailless apes are called) and humans, apes belong to the group of mammals called primates.
Monkey is a term of African origin (probably from the Bantu Makako) used as a common designation for all species of apes or anthropoid primates. It is strictly applied in Brazil to cebides (or New World monkeys) in general. In the strict sense, "monkey" refers to primate species belonging to the genus Macaca.
where the monkeys live
Old World monkeys are found in Africa and parts of Asia. New World monkeys inhabit the tropical areas of Central and South America. In general, monkeys live in trees in tropical and equatorial forests. Baboons and other species often live on the ground, in fields or in rocky areas.
The name mico originates, according to the Aurélio Dictionary, from the continental caraíba (karib). It is widely used in Brazil, where it usually applies to species of the genus Cebus, in the South, and to small species, or marmosets, in the North.

The term marmoset originates from the ancient Tupi sagûi and also designates the small callitrichid monkeys.

Also according to Cunha, the term simian, which also designates monkeys (having been recorded in Portuguese in the 16th and 17th centuries), comes from the Latin simius, from simus, "which has a flat nose".
Physical characteristics
The size of monkeys varies greatly. The little lion tamarin measures only 14 centimeters, not counting the tail. The biggest baboons can reach 1.15 meters.
Behavior
Most monkey species are usually active during the day. The species called the night monkey, as the name implies, is active at night.
reproduction
The gestation period of female monkeys ranges from five to about seven months. In most species, the female usually has one offspring per pregnancy. Puppies are born helpless and depend heavily on their parents during infancy. In general, young monkeys become adults at 3 or 4 years of age.
