Phipps Cemetery: East Tennessee

Phipps was a brutal slave master who kept his slaves chained in the basement of Rotherwood Mansion not too far from the cemetery. Rumor has Phipps mistress practiced voodoo and used it against any slave or white who tried to give her trouble. Phipps passed away in the 1860s. It is said he suffered from some type of incurable fever. While he was laying his bed right before his death, a countless number of flies swarmed into his nostrils and mouth, which eventually suffocate him. During his funeral and during the procession to the cemetery, there was a storm starting to role in over the are. His casket got extremely heavy where horses weren't able to pull it. While trying to pull the casket, the lid instantly came open and a massive black dog popped out. That is where the “hound of hell" name comes from. After his death, the slaves he owned rebelled against his mistress for her cruelty towards them while he was alive. They eventually murdered her on the property. Today, it is said you can hear Phipps' wicked laugh throughout the halls of Rotherwood along with many visitors who have reported seeing and hearing a number of voices and noises, some have been physically attacked.
