BODYCAM: Deputy Forced To Shoot Chimpanzee That Attacked Woman in Oregon

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has released bodycam footage from a deputy’s response to a chimpanzee attack that left a 50-year-old woman seriously injured in Northeastern Oregon.

As shown in the video clip above, the Umatilla County deputy approached a fenced-off enclosure calmly to assess the situation. As he walks closer, the chimp begins to make noises. The video clip captures the deputy whistling to catch the chimpanzee’s attention before calling out to see if anyone was in the vicinity.

A voice, presumed to be the homeowner and mother of the victim, responds. This is assumed to be the same woman who placed the initial 9-1-1 call.

The deputy asked if she was safe, to which she responded “I need you to shoot him.” After another remark that was indistinguishable from the video, she told the deputy to “Do a headshot.”

To this, the Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy is seen aiming and firing. He called for backup and an ambulance as the woman can be heard yelling to get an ambulance for her injured daughter.

Buck the chimpanzee was kept as a pet by Tamara Brogoitti for 17 years. On Sunday, local authorities were called to her home after Buck attacked her daughter. Lieutenant Sterrin Ward with the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office told KAPP-KVEW the victim suffered several bites to her torso, arms, and legs.
