The benefits of a keto diet
The ketogenic diet is a form of diet that advocates consuming a lot of fat, a moderate amount of protein, and few carbohydrates. Its purpose is to decrease the body's stores of glycogen so that it draws its energy from fats and proteins. The body then enters a state of ketosis, a metabolic state in which the liver produces large numbers of ketones, an alternate source of energy for the brain. This diet is very popular, and there are countless before and after photos circulating on social media touting its results. Here are some benefits of following a keto diet and why it can help you reach your goals.
Weightloss
Several studies have shown that people who eat a diet high in fat and low in carbohydrates burn fat faster than those who consume a lot of carbohydrates and low in fat. This is primarily because the low insulin levels induced by a low carbohydrate (keto) diet eliminates excess water from the body. While in ketosis, you experience less hunger, which can be very helpful in controlling your calorie intake and encouraging weight loss. It has been found that low carbohydrate diets also effectively reduce visceral fat stored mainly in the abdominal cavity.
Mental performance
The ketones produced during a low-carbohydrate diet are a much more efficient source of energy than glucose. Studies have shown that they can improve cognitive impairment and even have a positive effect on certain medical conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. A diet high in fat helps stimulate the balance of omega 3s and 6s, which are vital for optimal brain function. Additionally, being in ketosis may encourage the production of mitochondria and adenosine triphosphate in brain memory cells, which improves performance and mental clarity.
Reduced risk of chronic disease
A keto diet can boost the body's defenses against many medical conditions. By reducing inflammation and improving the functioning of mitochondria, it can help reduce the risk of developing several chronic diseases. Cancer cells usually have abnormal mitochondria that require more glycogen. The state of ketosis allows normal cells to be nourished while starving cancer cells that cannot use the energy of ketones due to their mitochondrial dysfunction.
Improvement in blood pressure
High blood pressure significantly increases the risk of contracting several diseases; it is one of the leading causes of death in the world. A low carbohydrate diet has been shown to be more effective than a low-fat diet in lowering blood pressure. Some people even claim that the keto diet is as effective as some drug treatments, especially when combined with the weight loss it causes, helping to improve cardiovascular health and function.
Numerous nutritional scientific studies have proven that this diet can have a very positive impact on general health and bodily functions. As long as you can stick to this diet, the rewards are plentiful. For people who have failed to achieve satisfactory results with traditional methods, the ketogenic approach is definitely worth considering.
