Delphinidae give birth on average once every two years. The calf can be as small as 50-60 cm, or as large as a third of its mother's length, like a beluga whale.

Before delivery, the dolphin moves a lot, "yawns", arching the back and tail. Noticing these signs, the other members of the herd come to her aid. They form a tight ring around the birthing dolphin, helping and protecting her if necessary.
