Sustainable wildlife management in the Rupununi, Guyana
Fish and wildlife are an integral part of the indigenous culture and diet in the Rupununi region of Guyana, which borders Brazil and Venezuela. However, threats to the Rupununi’s rich biodiversity are increasing as the area becomes more accessible and new economic activities take off.
The Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme has been established to address these challenges and improve the conservation and sustainable use of wildlife. In the Rupununi, the SWM Programme is being implemented by the Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission in coordination with CIFOR. Guyana is one of twelve African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries participating in the initiative. The SWM Programme is co-funded by the European Union and the French Facility for Global Environment.
