As a foreigner in China, you will (obviously) be noticed more easily and will be approached frequently for photos, to practice English and/or be "interviewed" to get your opinions on various topics.
I personally try to represent the USA in a favorable light so that my country and the next foreigner visiting is viewed upon favorably, even if sometimes you'd rather not be approached at all
