These dogs, or their ancestors, have been known in Siberia for thousands of years, in a specific region east of the Ural Mountains, initially used as multifunctional dogs, they were specially selected over hundreds of years by the Chukchi, a people who live in the region, for sledding in extreme cold conditions.

In 1867, when Russia still dominated Alaska, [2] these dogs migrated from Asian Siberia to Alaska, and began to become popular around the world. A historic event contributed to the worldwide popularization of the breed when a pack of huskies and the like helped save the population of Nome, a village in the American area of ​​Alaska, by bringing medicines and supplies to isolated inhabitants by a storm when no other means of transport could do it. For this feat, two specimens in particular became very famous, the dog called Balto, who was as leader of the sled at the time of arrival in Nome, and the dog Togo, who led, at the age of 12, the sled by the stretch more dangerous, because of these achievements, occupying places in the culture since then, receiving monuments in honor, having their bodies stuffed after their deaths and displayed in a museum, and also being represented in films.
