Liberty Minute - Memorial Day
Today is not a day to honor living veterans like myself. Memorial Day is not just the day to mark the start of summer with barbeques and picnics. It is not just a long weekend and sales at retail stores.
Memorial Day is a day set aside to honor the roughly 1.4 million US soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen that have died fighting for freedom.
Soldiers like Sgt. First Class Alwyn Cashe who refused to get on the medi-vac chopper until all six men he had pulled from a burning vehicle were on. Alwyn Cashe, who was on fire himself as he rescued those men while being shot at. Alwyn Cashe who sacrificed his life so that others may live. The first black man to receive the medal of honor in Iraq and Afghanistan is a true hero by any definition and just one story that we should share on Memorial Day.
So, enjoy your Memorial Day, but take the time to remember our national heroes, like Sgt. First Class Alwyn Cashe.
