How we Eliminate Weeds on our Certified Organic Farm
Sponsored by https://www.CentralSynthetics.com
I am out with the field cultivator tilling in another flush of weeds. Part of our organic plan is planting later in the season so we can till 2-3 times more to kill off the weeds and get rid of some of the weed seeds that are in the "weed bank" or soil. I lifted up the crumblers on the back of the cultivator so it leaves the ground light and fluffy. If I were to leave the crumblers down, it would pack the soil and increase the seed to soil contact. This would result in many more weeds regrowing.
We are always learning.....as I write this I am thinking I should leave the crumblers down when doing these weed killing passes. I will be going over the field a couple more times and I DO want the weeds to grow during this time. Then on the last pass before planting I should lift of the crumblers so less weeds grow once the crop is planted. Well, too late this year to do that. Definitely something I am going to try next year.
