“Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.” – Thomas Jefferson

ABOUT

August 2020 (D.S.S. 200.5) Oatmeal Cookies Made Six Ways In One Batch :—:— Garage sale hopping happened upon me a find I gave to my grandma, who remembers the perils of WWII (1943 edition of "The Joy of Cooking"). There was a chapter on rationing recipes, and it reminded me of my two favorite dishes in the world that my great grandma would make (both Depression-Era, penny-pinching, gourmet meals). When I used to teach Culinary Arts at a local school, I made sure all of my students got to make one of those dishes (great college dorm room fare). :—:— It took a year of variations to create this thrifty, toothsome, six-variety treat (truly the number of combinations runs far greater than six, and you will inevitably invent your own recipe by the time you attempt making mine). :—:— The music is my Teenage Engineering OP-1 sampler working with a little clip from the great Leon Russell on California public television in the early seventies. I took a fourteen-second clip and turned it into a minute-long, soulful, Southern comfort theme (perfect for these sometimes-rich cookies, some of which ended up in the American South [yet they were the only ones not pictured]) :—:— These six-way oatmeal cookies were sent to five different places (to my penpals across America). These cookies made their way to California; Florida; Washington; Arizona; and my own home state of Michigan (via the postal service, albeit they seemed all to have arrived stale, even though I baked them the day before I sent them). I will have to either invest in a vacuum sealer, or I will have to find some other means of better persevering the goodness when my scrumptious goodies get given. :—:— I cannot stress enough the multitude of moving parts this very short video had. The exceptional folks that would actually have a go at this recipe would doubtless not mind pausing to learn how to make it. For the vast majority otherwise that will never make this or any similar delicious dish, the quickness and briefness of this video is meant to be enjoyed like a dense drawing worthy of minute scrutiny (but also enjoy the flow from moment to moment). :—:— I am very proud I was able to feature myself biking through Detroit's Greektown and Downtown and Midtown and New Center (ending up on Stevie Wonder Avenue)! There was a thunderstorm brewing when I started my journey to the post office to mail the cookies to my five penpals. When I left the post office to bike back to my car (this time not video recording), silent lightning and warm Spring sprinkles spat at me until I finished biking back to my car, and Providence was Gracious, because the full-on storm only began to pour as I drove home dry in my dutiful vehicle. :—:— The next cookies I hope to mail out to my penpals are my brilliant Ginger Snap Cookies, with Candied Ginger made from scratch inside! Stay tuned for those delights!
