NCDPI Social Emotional Learning Training in English
NCDPI is developing Social Emotional Learning and infusing it into every subject k-12. It involves focusing on identity and emotions. In this video, Mary Phillips of the English Lang Arts dept in the NCDPI performs training in SEL for professional teacher development. She leads a discussion in the difference between Catcher in the Rye and I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. The discussion is very simplistic and Catcher in the Rye is denigrated because it is about a "white guy". The other book is elevated--except the other book is hardly literature. The first 12 pages of Mexican Daughter is filled with offensive language and simplistic stereotypes. Mexican Daughter is not literature, let alone age appropriate for 9th grade. Watch and find out.
