Designing sports stadiums is challenging. It requires designers to juggle the needs of the local environment with the specialist requirements of sports fans and athletes whilst at the same time considering the commercial viability of the building.

What are the important considerations when designing sports stadiums?
In terms of construction structure design and waterproofing when it comes to covered stadiums are still the primary consideration however we also have to think about the lines of sight for spectators and roof structures that provide the penetration of natural daylight to ensure a quality experience.

Lighting is crucial when designing stadiums as the field has to be properly illuminated for both the players and the spectators. Most stadiums have natural light if it’s not covered but they do also require artificial sources of light for night time games and matches or when there is low or dim sunlight. In the past metal halides were used to illuminate the field but now LED lights are replacing these in a bid to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.
