The Gregory Gulch II and the Becker Bates Gold Mine

On May 6, 1859 John H Gregory discovered the first gold lode in Colorado before it was a state or even a territory. At that time it was the extended territory of Kansas. On May 19, 1859 Captain William Bates of the United States Army paid Gregory $200 to find the second gold lode. This video is of the Gregory Gulch II and in the distance you can see the Becker Bates Mine. Theodore Becker came here in 1860 and started buying up claims on the Bates Lode. It remained in his family for three generations. He had a son named Henry Becker. Henry and Eliza Becker had a son and named him Theodore. They generally leased out the mine but would never give out written leases. For that reason the mine never was fully mined to great depths. The maps I have show the bottom to be 525 feet. I leased it out and there is a lot going on with repairing the building and the old timbers. Back to the history...since Kansas was an agricultural state they did not have mining laws. For that reason Gregory and two thousand men sat on this hill called Bates Hill and wrote the mining laws. Many of those laws are in place today as the foundation for mining. This spot about halfway between Black Hawk and Central City. There are plenty of things to do here between hiking casinos and museums. The historic Central City Opera House is here as well as the Gilpin County Arts Association. The Madem Lou Brunch bed races are just one of the summer events in August. The new Levit Street Market is now open on Sundays. If you would like to see still images you can visit http:// Coloradojohnny.com.
