Penguin facts: how many species do you know? | Animal Fact Files
Penguins are flightless birds found living throughout the southern hemisphere (though one species just barely makes it into the northern hemisphere, too!). Penguins are typically black and white in color with dark backs and light stomachs which help them blend in with the water while they swim due to counter-shading. There are approximately 189 penguin species depending on who you ask and these range from the largest penguins, the emperor penguins, to the smallest, the little blue penguins. These funny birds walk upright due to their rump-positioned rear legs but they can also get around by sliding on their bellies.
