Ever since cats put their adorable claws on us about 9,500 years ago, humans have had a love affair with cute pets.
Today, more than 80 million cats live in homes in the United States, with an estimated three cats for every dog on the planet. (Watch a video about the secret life of cats.) However, there is still a lot we don't know about our feline friends - including what they think of their owners.
John Bradshaw is an expert on feline behavior at the University of Bristol and author of the new book Cat Sense. After watching pet cats for several years, he came to an intriguing conclusion: they don't really understand us like dogs.
Bradshaw recently shared some of his insights with National Geographic.
