‘Full-scale war’ feared as fighting between Israel and Hamas escalates amid air strikes

Spiralling violence between Israel and Hamas Islamists is “escalating towards a full-scale war”, the UN envoy for Middle East Peace warned on May 11, 2021. Tor Wennesland’s statement followed a day that saw the Palestinian militant group fire more than 600 rockets at Israel, which responded with hundreds of air strikes. The violence has left at least 30 Palestinians and three Israelis dead, with many more injured in the two days of fighting following rising tensions in Jerusalem at the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
