Vitamin D is vital for overall good health. It plays several roles in maintaining your body’s cells functioning and healthy the way they should, and for most people who don’t get enough vitamin D, so supplements are joint.

However, taking excessive doses of vitamin D for extended periods may lead to excessive buildup in your body. The main consequence of this is a buildup of calcium in your bloodstream (hypercalcemia), which may cause weakness, nausea and vomiting, and frequent urination. Vitamin D toxicity may progress to bone pain and kidney problems, such as developing calcium stones.

Essentially, toxicity is rare and happens almost exclusively in people who take long-term and high-dose supplements without consistent monitoring of their blood levels. It’s also possible to inadvertently consume excessive vitamin D by taking supplements that contain much higher amounts than are listed on the label.
