The St. Louis Hawken 1981 delivers consistent dependability and accuracy. The 28" blued barrel has a 1 in 48" twist and features CVA's own patented breech plug system for a more reliable ignition and greater safety. The Ultra Grain Finish hardwood stock is beautifully decorated with a brass buttplate, patchbox, trigger guard, wedge plates, nose cap and thimbles. This is a sturdy gun. Steady aim is made possible by the Hawken style trigger guard, which allows the shooter to tighten his grip. Double set triggers allow for sensitive preset trigger pull for greater accuracy. Conneticut Valley Arms was founded way back in 1971, specializing in traditional side-lock muzzleloading rifles and do it yourself kits. There was a black powder craze sweeping the country in those years as people went mad over Hawken's rifles and the Mountain Men Rendezvous, probably spurred on by movies such as "Jeremiah Johnson". The country's bicentennial was also approaching. The heyday of the original Hawken was undoubtedly the late-1840’s and the 1850’s the period of the Great Western Migration to Oregon, Utah, and California. The demand for the Hawken brother’s rifles during this period made these their most prolific years. But this was nothing compared to the heyday the Hawken enjoyed in the 1970’s. You can build it and you can shoot it. Was all the sales pitch CVA needed.
