Musth is a period when male elephants experience heightened levels of testosterone and attendant increases in sexual and aggressive behavior. During this period, which lasts from a few days to several weeks, a hormone-rich liquid streams from the temporal glands on the side their heads (as can be seen in the first clip). They also may emit a specialized vocalization called the “Musth Rumble” In the video 📷, this may be the call given, possibly in response to, a funny-sounding roar in the distance. The male is clearly listening to something in the distance and when he calls, shakes his head and flaps his ears.
