🌎 Golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus Rosalia) Atlantic Forest Rio de Janeiro, Brazil |2021

The golden lion tamarin (scientific name: Leontopithecus rosalia) is an endemic primate of Brazil, of the Callitrichidae family and Leontopithecus genus. It occurs exclusively in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, but some authors have already considered its occurrence in the south of Espírito Santo. Currently, they are found mainly in the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve and the União Biological Reserve, and live in the highest strata of the forest. They can be found in stretches of secondary forest. It was once considered a subspecies, today it is a species itself, like the other species of lion tamarins. Evidence from phylogenetic studies shows that the black lion tamarin is the closest species to the golden lion tamarin. There are no known fossils of the species.
