In nature, they hide the pee and poop as a way to hide their tracks from predators and of course, that way they also guarantee the surprise attack. Some primitive habits still remain today.

You can find sanitary sand in pet shops and supermarkets. Remember to keep the box always with plenty of sand and always clean - as cats can avoid it if it is dirty.
