What can be said about love that hasn’t already been said? Poets better than me have tried to capture the essence of love with all of its complicated nuanced fractions. As I think of all the meanings for love, the one that stands out most to me is the word honor. To honor someone is to show the utmost respect and love for them. To honor is to revere in outward and inward ways. There is nothing more special than to feel honored and respected, so what does that look like?

It is first and foremost the notion of doing no harm. It is not selfish, greedy or stingy. By honoring your loved ones you show them respect in your words and deeds. You show up and rise to a level you never thought you could because the other is worthy of your best effort. You don’t just do things they like, you do what they need and you do it because you want to make their life better because you’re in it. The image of a father working hard so his family can feel safe and secure comes to mind when thinking of doing for others. He may not always feel like doing the hard stuff, but because he takes his responsibility seriously and he is mature enough to realize what is truly important in his life, he rises up and does everything he can to provide a stable and comfortable life for his family. He does this out of love, respect and honor – honor for them and honor for himself. He is proud to be able to do the right things for his beloved. So love isn’t flowers, candy, or just kind gestures -yes those can be nice and appreciated, but love is mostly commitment, fortitude and a maturity that does for the other more than ever thought possible because it is the outward expression of an inner choice to give and be more for the one you have chosen to love.

Who do you need to honor right now in your life? Can you find a way to do that? If you can’t, you may want to ask yourself if it’s really love then, because a true heart has no other choice then to give all that it can for the other and for yourself.
