Water Kefir Dead (Not Multiplying, Strange Taste, Producing Foam, Small Grains) - What Went Wrong?

Cultivating water kefir over long time is not easy. There are quite some challenges and whenever you think you got everting perfect and nothing can go wrong any more, then it happens. The kefir grains start shrinking, the water has different taste and even some foam on top, the grains are not multiplying any more, so what could be the cause?

Here the most likely reasons:
- Using contaminated water with Chlorine or Chloramines (already using this water for rinsing the grains is too much). Cities sometimes switch from Chlorine to Chloramine disinfection in the drinking water, but normal charcoal water filters (e.g. from the fridge or whole home filters) cannot remove the Chloramine from the water - only the Chlorine !!!
- Put the grains in direct contact with undissolved sugar grains
- Using cheap fruits from the supermarket which have toxic or anti fungus coating
- Kefir grains became to hot / direct sun
- Kefir grains were in contact with cheap metal (stainless steel shouldn't be a problem)
- Kefir grains have been starving (without sugar) for too long time (after 3 days usually)
- Other contamination
