Considered mystical animals, cats thus approached the deities of the religion of ancient Egypt. It comprised three major thirds, the pantheon having nine main gods (like Osiris or Isis, out of a total of about 700 deities).

The cat was associated with the goddess Bastet, daughter of Ra, the sun god. The belief that cats have magical powers was then passed down through the centuries.
