why do businesses struggle

Here's 13 reasons that help explain why new business owners struggle. See which one of these apply to you and your business.

First though, as I was putting this together, I realized one extra big, fat reason why businesses struggle, so that's your Bonus Reason, which you'll get at the very end.

In the meantime, in no particular order, here's your 13 reasons why businesses struggle:

1. No mission, no sense of purpose or clear goals.

2. Potential customers, existing customers, and the market as a whole isn't put first, before the needs of the business owner.

3. No method, approach, or strategy to increase sales.

4. Impatience. Jumping from tactic to tactic, strategy to strategy without giving anything a chance to begin working. No concerted effort on any one thing. Trying too many things at once.

5. Prioritizing making money / chasing money over your market's needs.

5. Not focusing on the 20% of your business that's responsible for 80% of your results.

6. Not creating or establishing a competitive advantage for your business in your marketplace.

7. Putting your "magical big idea" first / not learning and researching your market's needs, problems, challenges, and issues.

8. Not providing fast, caring, support for customers.

9. Failing to identify a target audience / target special interest group.

10. Not developing a clear, simple, and understandable competitive advantage to set the business apart from all other vendors in the marketplace.

11. No clear marketing strategy to inform the business's target audience that your pain-solving products and services exist.

12. Not keeping overhead low.

13. Too much analysis, over-thinking, strategizing, etc., without taking measurable action to move forward.

BONUS: Not spending enough time to truly understand and appreciate the business's target audience -- their biggest challenges, problems, concerns, and issues.
