Do police officers need weapons during traffic stops?

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott said that he doesn't believe that officers need to necessarily have weapons every time they’re making a traffic stop. This comes after Officer Potter appeared to accidentally shoot Daunte Wright in Minnesota. There has been other recent examples where cops have needed weapons during traffic stops in New Mexico & Texas. Don't police officers need to be armed during traffic stops?
