Quick tutorial on one part of guitar and bass maintenance that anyone can do for themselves. Clean frets play smoother and look much better and can even impact the perceived value of your guitar or bass if you go to sell it. All you need is a little masking tape, 0000 "Super fine" or "finishing grade" steel wool and a little time and elbow grease. If you are cleaning frets on something like a Fender Strat that has a pickup very close to the end of the fretboard, you'll want to cover up or tape off that pickup as the steel wool will tend to be attracted to the pickup's magnets. Some people like to add a polish or something similar to keep the frets from oxidizing. You should not experience any sort of rapid oxidation unless the frets are made of some bogus cheap material.
