ISA Certified Arborist, Agent Dude, checks his Satsuma for signs of life after the historic 2021 Texas freeze.
Texas Citrus did not fare well. Most unprotected citrus were destroyed by the freeze. The only trees that survived without help were Kumquats, a handful of Satsumas, and native citrus (sour orange).
This video demonstrates how to check a citrus tree to see, definitively, if it is dead. Scape the bark with a knife. Moist wood and green bark indicate live tissue, and dry, blackened bark indicates dead tissue.
This particular Satsuma is dead, but the root (sour orange) is still alive.
