There is the two stud, three stud and for stud wall corners. The four stud wall corner will be your best for strength and longevity for the sheet rock. Often when remodeling or renovations, people will choose a cheaper and what will get them by at the time method. I will talk about the cons of going the cheaper routes.

The two stud wall corner uses metal clips that give the drywall something to rest against so that you can push another piece of drywall against it at a 90 degree to support it. I do not recommend this unless it is just too hard to get another board in if this was a renovation. The weaker the corner support is, the higher risk you will have of having cracked corners in your drywall. The three stud wall corner is also a weak design due to you are anchoring your drywall on the weakest side of a stud. 2x4’s are strong when you are nailing or screwing on the thin (2”) edge. If you are using the wider surface it flexes and tends to bow or warp. The four stud wall corner is your strongest however, even though it is called the four stud corner, it actually uses scrap blocks in one area of its construction. There are diagrams to illustrate what I mean.
