In his Life of the Virgin Mary, the doctor and father of the Church, St. Maximus the Confessor (d 662) compares this passage to some others in the Gospel where other women are described as looking on from a distance (cf. Matt 27:55). He explains the reason why Mary of Cleophas and Mary Magdalen along with St. John were able to draw neigh to His Majesty crucified. It was the courage and boldness of the Mother, “how she stood inseparably before the Cross of her Son. And they put on courage … and shared her sorrow.” … adding “she safeguarded all the courage and wisdom not only of the men and women present then but of every sort of men and women, both those before and those to come.”
