Sunshine of Your Love by Cream
Written in 1967, ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ would combine elements of traditional Blues with a new ‘heavy’
sound that would later set the foundation for hard rock music. Sunshine of Your Love is a unique musical collaboration,
featuring the classic opening Blues riff written by bassist/singer Jack Bruce, African-style drum rhythms by
Ginger Baker, a hard-rock chorus by Eric Clapton, and lyrics written by Pete Brown.
Cream Sunshine of Your Love Guitar Lesson for Beginners
This easy beginner lesson will show how to play the intro riff to Sunshine of Your Love and all the rhythm guitar parts.
Sunshine of Your Love Intro Riff
The opening intro guitar riff to Sunshine of Your Love is based on the ‘D’ Blues scale. Note to addition of the passing tone or ‘blue note’ (fifth
string/eleventh fret) as well as the phrasing (the Sunshine of Your Love riff begins and ends on a ‘D’ root note).
Strum Sunshine of Your Love Rhythm Guitar Chords
The verse chord progression to Sunshine of Your Love ‘locks-in’ with the lyrics. For example, each of the four syllables of ‘...getting-
near-dawn...’ will ‘lock-in’ or ‘land’ with each of the four chords (‘D7-D7-C7-D7') played.
The chord progression of Sunshine of Your Love shifts from a standard 12-Bar Blues format of the Verse to a more-‘heavy’
rock sound of the Chorus that features the use of power chords.
One way to capture the rhythm for this
repeated ‘A5' strum is to emulate the rhythm of a galloping horse (‘dun - da-da-dun - da-da-dun... etc.’).
Sunshine of Your Love Guitar Tone
While in Cream, Eric Clapton became known for his unique guitar tone, which many considered a ‘thick’ or warm
sound. Replicating the guitar tone to Sunshine of Your Love is a combination of equipment, settings, and technique. With its solid-wood body,
the Gibson SG provides better sustain, especially when played through a Marshall tube amp with distortion.
The tone controls are turned all the way down, and the pickup setting should be set at middle position with the
neck pickup set at full volume. Regardless of all the tone setting options, it is the guitarists’ finger strength and
technique that ultimately determines the overall quality of tone and sustain of Sunshine of Your Love.
Sunshine of Your Love Guitar Solo
The guitar solo to Sunshine of Your Love by Cream is played primarily in the Key of ‘D’ Blues, and follows a twelve-bar
format with the tab showing two bars per line. Occasional riffs are added from the ‘D’ Pentatonic Major
scale. The Sunshine of Your Love guitar solo features Eric Clapton’s famous ‘Fool’ guitar, which was a 1964 Gibson SG named as a tribute
to the artist who painted the body of the guitar with a psychedelic look.

Paluzzi Guitar
The objective of the Paluzzi Guitar video series is to help establish a foundation of guitar fundamentals by applying various playing techniques (rhythm, fingerstyle, and soloing) to various styles of music. The more playing styles and techniques a guitarist can learn, the more diverse and self-sufficient a guitarist will become. A self-sufficient guitarist can then teach themselves, communicate with other musicians, and even write their own music once a solid foundation of fundamentals is established.
The Creative Guitarist Method Series was written and designed by Kevin J. Paluzzi of Paluzzi Guitar Instruction in San Diego, CA. For more information on private lessons and books, go to:

There really isn’t any one particular playing style or technique required in order to classify someone as a guitarist. The Paluzzi Guitar series of books and videos are designed with a ‘pick and choose’ topic format (songwriting, soloing, etc.) so that once the Guitar Basics are completed, you can then decide to focus on whatever topic you wish to study.
