Barbara Hemphill began her career in the organizing industry in 1978 with a $7 ad in a New York City newspaper. Often referred to as the “Paper Tiger Lady” from her bestselling book Taming the Paper Tiger, Barbara founded Productive Environment Institute in order to train and certify consultants in her unique organizing methodology.

Certified Productive Environment Specialists provide clients with a clear path from overwhelmed to optimized by helping them create a productive environment in 90 days or less so they can accomplish their work and enjoy their life without procrastination & overwhelm. Her passion is helping people eliminate the physical, emotional, and spiritual clutter that prevents them from accomplishing their work and enjoying their lives.

Barbara has been featured on national media platforms such as Good Morning America, The Today Show and CNN Nightly News. She has also been showcased in publications including USA Today, New York Times, Fast Company, Reader’s Digest, Real Simple and Guideposts. She is currently a contributing writer for Formidable Woman magazine.

Barbara’s most recent book, Less Clutter More Life, reveals that physical and digital clutter is a symptom of emotional and spiritual clutter. The most common question she gets is “Where do I start?” The first step to go from Overwhelmed to Optimized is an Assessment—Barbara invites you to visit ProductiveEnvironment.com to get your Productive Environment Score in less than 5 minutes.

“During my 40+ years in the organizing industry, I have observed that the giving of gifts, while well-intentioned — often becomes clutter.”

On the giving side, there is the emotional clutter expressed as “I have to buy a gift…” On the receiving side, it is the physical clutter of what to do with something you don’t really need without feeling disrespectful of the person you care about who gifted it.

Since I was a child I have dreamed of being a “philanthropist,” which I defined as donating millions of dollars to worthy organizations, but a wise friend reassured me that philanthropy has more to do with the heart than the amount of money. Instead of spending money on a gift that you may not need or want, and In the spirit of my long-time belief “Together We Are Better,” I am donating money in your honor to Zoe Empowers.

Thank you for who you are and for all you do in this world!
